Speaking Engagements

Smart Moves (...Continued)

So, what does ‘too old’ really mean? Well, first of all it means you may cost too much. Why should I hire a single person at $80,000, when I can hire two new grads at $40,000 each who will work rings around each other to prove to me they’re keepers.

Tip #1
Do a reality check on your salary expectations and build a solid case for your value.

With a more mature person, an employer may wonder if you are so entrenched in old patterns of thinking and behaviour that you may slow down the team and prove to be more of an obstacle than a facilitator.

Tip # 2
Demonstrate right from the beginning – in your resume and cover letter – and on into your interviews, just how flexible, quick thinking and innovative you are. Stress your superior technology skills (and if you don’t have them, get them asap!).

If you want to be seen as younger – look, act and sound younger. Perception and presentation are everything. Your first impression is a lasting one.

Tip # 3
Bring energy and vitality into your meetings with a spring in your step, a firm handshake and a genuine, warm smile. Make sure you look sharp and update your look – yes, makeover time is here. Get new glasses, a new haircut, a new outfit – whatever it takes to give you that polished, confident professional look when you look in the mirror.
